By "shower" do you mean there was a hose you could attach to the faucet? There are still quite a few European hotels with this set-up (I'm not knocking it). The only time I had serious reservations about French plumbing was in the Pere LaChaise public toilet - it was only a drain in the floor. Bon Dieu!

When I stayed in a Paris hotel there was a huge tub, and the shower facet/ handheld at the front, but no shower curtain or way to prevent the shower water from going all over the floor! It was a really nice bathroom though! Outside the window we could see the Eiffel Tower.

And ewwwww to the Pere LaChaise bathroom! We made a bee-line right to Jim Morrison's grave, no potty time! :)
