I appreciate 'Riders On The Storm' för it's down-to-earth, straight, clear but heartfelt approach.

Once tried to read 'Light My Fire' but Ray's such a storyteller, with emphasis on painting images.

I was at the local used bookstore when I saw "No one here gets out alive" for $2. So I got it been having trouble even getting through it. The authors potray Jim to be almost like a monster, and when at times, we know he wasn't exactly the nicest person, I am still outraged by the stuff thats in the book. Does anyone know where they got their sources from or, instead were they looking to write the best selling fiction novel?

It was written by Jerry Hopkins, a journalist for Rolling Stone Magazine and a personal friend/aquantance of Jim's, and Danny Sugarman, one of the Doors biggest, most eager fans at the time whom they hired to respnd to fan mail and since became their manager until he passed away in '05. Both authors knew Jim and the book is a great read and is in no way, a bunch of lies.

Jerry was an aquaintance of Jim's on a solid friendly basis, rather than just a "Hi, how are you," but not a friend.

Danny Sugerman, (think "er" not "ar"), may have started out answering mail, etc., but was eventually treated by Jim as a sort of younger brother, according to Jim.

Sometimes, and the cautionary word is "sometimes," Jim could be a monster. Most of the time he was not a monster.

I understand that Ray contributed some of the mythology to the book as in Greek, not myth as in Jim. As to what else Ray may have contributed I don't know. Wasn't there when the book was written. Was NOHGOA a book of lies? I think it depended on who was telling Jerry what and how it was perceived by Jerry. I found some truth, some lies. But many of the lies, were told to Jerry as being the truth and that's what Jerry put in the book.

Don't know why I'm responded to your comment; except the movie quote...
my movie quote is "for the the truth can be adjusted" ...Michael Clayton...ya know,
that guy George something.... So this is outta date, you maynot even read this
*is there anyone out there?* My questions are: did Robbie ever write a book? Cuz I read Ray's,John's * Danny Sugarman's. Also, just went to my local book sale and was reminded of t.c. boyle...actually, got him to sign his book and asked how the deal came about that the Doors were mentioned. He told me, if they agreed to let him use
the lyrics in his book; "drop city"if, he in return would write the forward/introduction for their c.d. Those
California guys rock in tennis shoes....just kick me out familiarfreak when you're tired of me....*did i say that?*

This is another thread I think it's important to revive. NOHGOA literally made me sick, and like a lot of people at the time (like Frank Lisciandro) I blamed Danny for the nastiness.

If I'm remembering correctly --I've only read it once, in 1980 when it was first published--PK is the only one who comes out of that mess with any kind of dignity intact, which should tell you right there that it's mostly BS. However, it wasn't until Salli Stevenson and I got to know each other in 1996 that I found out that the ugliness of NOHGOA was almost entirely Hopkins' doing, and that Danny had tried his best to "warm it up," as he put it then, but that Hopkins rode roughshod over any attempt of Danny's to give Jim's fans a more accurate portrait of the man.

yeah, read that... Mizz Scarlett, one I forgot to mention, is my favorite,"The Doors The Complete Illustrated Lyrics" compiled by Danny Sugarman copyright 1991...

I agree, the book is terrible! On the video " A Tribute To Jim Morrison" Jerry Hopkins says in an interview that the book put two of his children through college. What an shameful admittance.

Jerry Hopkins is pond scum, in my not so humble opinion. I still can't believe--given what I now know about that creep-that I blamed poor Danny for the ugliness of NOHGOA back in 1980 when it was first published.

It wasn't until Salli Stevenson and I started talking back in 1996 or so that I learned the true state of affairs, and how poor Danny* had tried and tried to "warm up" the portrayal of Jim in that ugly book and how Hopkins had bulldozed every effort to mitigate the sheer ugliness of that portrayal.

********
* Jerry Hopkins, if you ever have the misfortune to come face to face with me you'd best duck and cover, because I can guarantee you will NOT enjoy the encounter.

I still believe in the Cosmic Giggle, even if Rolling Stone doesn't any more.
