Hey all, I'm Big Sam, I'm 15 and a HUGE Doors fan. I was wondering, does anyone know why Ray Manzarek sings You Need Meat on the Single? I think his voice fits it perfectly, because its so bluesy, but was it because Jim wasnt able to sing it and they needed it to be released?

Also, on the Album Backstage and Dangerous, who sings "You Need Meat" and "Close To You"? Because it doesnt sound like Ray, the voice is too high, is it Robbie?

Yes, it is Ray singing on both of the tracks on B&D.

I think Ray always sang Close to You. Doesn't he sing it on the Matrix version too? <_<

Most definitely sounds like Ray.

Ray sang "Close To You", "I'm a Man" and "You Need Meat (Don't Go No Further)" but WHY would they have Ray on lead vocals even for 3 songs? Jim had a much better voice.

Why not? Ray was a better than adequate singer and it allowed a little band back and forth.

Who knows why they chose to do it that way ... perhaps it was to give Jim a chance to cool down? Perhaps it's because Ray liked to sing?

I think it sounds great with Ray.

Maybe Ray was used to singing these old blues songs in earlier bands, Rick and the Ravens, etc? That's my thought. He only ever sang blues covers, never anything the band wrote after coming together...

Except in Amsterdam September 15, 1968 when Jim passed out during the Jefferson Airplane set and was taken to the hospital, Ray performed the entire show.

Personally I never cared for Ray's singing. I'll always dig the Morrison baritone voice.
