Does it exist?

My aunt told me she saw The Doors live in Lowell,
Massachusetts which I thought she was wrong, the closest I thought
they had appeared was at the Hampton Casino in NH. Then last week,
another person told me she saw them there telling me that she was
among other teen girls waiting for JIm to come out the back door only
to see him being dragged/carried out by two men with the toes of his
boots scraping the ground . . . then the biography of Jack Kerouac by
Elis Amburn reports that Jim attempted to visit Jack in Lowell but was
turned away by Kerouac's wife who told him to get a haircut first, an
anecdote listed without a source. What gives? None of the books I
checked indicate any shows in Lowell at anytime of their career. Note:
Kerouac was living in Lowell around 1968.

This guy has a web page where it says he played as an "opening act" in this Lowell club at a time when people like The Doors, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix others regularly stopped there.

Thanks

Your aunt may well be right as nobody can say that all the bands concerts were documenetd in Greg Shaws On The Road. Greg himself points out that dates and setlists are not always 100%.
Its certain that The Doors did indeed play places we are not aware of from the information we have at hand.
Especially in their earliest days before the full glare of publicity was upon them.
The band themselves cannot even remember every date they did and I have no doubt that there are a good number undocumented.
Be nice to collect all the information from the fans themselves and add to the data base but I doubt that will happen unless someone like Greg can follow up on the leads and as anyone who visited here and said they saw a Doors gig in such and such a place would just get called a liar here by the Thought Police if it was not in Shaws book its hardly an incentive to try to add to general Doors knowledge.
Its a shame as I like most here would really like to know every date and every song sung at those dates.

Well . . . on my end, I wil search through the local newspaper for any advertisements or reviews. I plan to do so also for the Hampton Beach, NH casino concert. I wish one of The Doors could help me out. Maybe i will check with Vince Treanor.

As for Massachusetts gigs, the Doors played Brighton MA in 67, which is just a Boston suburb, and they did Boston proper at the Back Bay Theatre 68' and again in 70' at the Boston Arena. Post Jim, the Doors played on the Boston common, and more recently with Ian in boston at the Orpheum Theatre....
But no Lowell

Beg to differ Tarn, I maybe wrong BUT I understood they did play Lowell......... as well as my old hang out, "The Surf" at Nantasket Beach in Hull. I'd met a fellow while shopping for music a few months back who had seen them at "The Cross Town Bus Club" in Brighton. He said Jim was really drunk but the group put on a hell of a show. The post Jim show on the Common drew over 11,000 people! :peace:

I did not know the Doors played (or might have played) the Hampton Beach Casino in NH. I have been there many times to see John Valby in the late 80s and early 90s.

It is a very small place, very old theater like inside (15+ years ago anyway). They also had a full bar and were very quick with the drinks...

I go to school in lowell and if you watch the very beginning of one the two "not to touch the earth" videos (youtube.com) they show a shot of a street that looks very much like one near Umass Lowell.

I dont think they performed in Lowell, but ive heard that Jim shot through there for a Kerouac convention when he was in the area.

Incidentally, every1 around here seems to tell me that eveytime the Doors performed in Boston Jim was drunker than usual.
I think it's a bunch of bullshit, myself.

Hi: I'm Scott. I live in Northern Mass. I've been researching this for about three months. I found the Lowell Ma concert. I'm holding off on releasing the details until I have all the info I am looking for. I'd like to conect w/ mapaul1 to learn more about his aunts experience. I've also stubbled onto more local doors concert info. I found a semi-retired DJ who says that he introduced the doors to play at a place in North Andover on Chickering Rd. He is fairly certain that Jay Leno (as a teenager) was there. I reviewed my video of The Tonight Show w/ Jay Leno (Jan 2003?) and he says he was a senior when he saw them perform. I need help in contacting him to find the date, location etc of this concert. I also have found that the Hampton Beach Ballroom concert date is probably inaccurate. I went to a recent Kerouac event weekend in Lowell to do more of this research. I asked for any local doors concert info, and any info about Morrison trying to meet Kerouac. I met Jack's brother-in-law and a friend named David Amaran who doubts that Jim and Jack met. I asked about the possible attempt by Jim, and they said Michael McClure would be the only person they can think of who would be left now to answer this. I've been trying to call Ellis Amburn to ask about his quote in his book, still no answ and no reply. I have also come to believe that the doors played at 'The Frolic's' @ Salisbury Beach, Ma. It no longer exisits. I wonder if they did Worcester Ma too? I'm trying to conect w/ Greg Shaw (yes he's alive, gets confused w/ another G. S.) to add and get credit for all of my efforts. This is why I am holding off on the details for now. If you have info, please contact me. Thanks, Scott.

It says they played the Commodore Ballroom in August of '67. Here's a little history on it: http://library.uml.e...ibit/mcom00.htm

I've been to Kerouac's grave in Lowell. Lowell is not the same city Kerouac grew up in.
The future's uncertain
And the end is always near.
