The passing of a beautiful man should be momentarily mourned, but the life of a beautiful man should be celebrated forever. Ray lived a beautiful life. That is why we know him and admire him. I believe that Ray would want us to celebrate his life, his art.

well said... it always seemed he dealt w/ & expressed Jim's legacy & spirit the same way.

the doors may have ended in new orleans, yet funerals in that city reflect & express just your sentiment. they find life giving purpose in death. Rebirth. The cycle renews again. Both Jim & Ray expressed this figuratively many times over.

thanks for the thought. after the pain, grab onto the life force from wh/ it was borne.

He is so alive and vibrant.... how in the world....

Here I am crying my eyes out....

The Whisky and Roxy have tributes for Ray:

Oh, that's beautiful.

This is just shocking to me, didn't even know he was ill. Ray was so feisty and full of life, I thought he'd live to a very august age & be an elder statesman of rock. At least we can celebrate his gift of music (and gab!) and that he lived a happy life where he got to achieve his dreams. Peace and love to Dorothy, Pablo and grandbabies.

Ray liked to tell funny stories about Jim. Here is Harvey Levin (TMZ) explaining how he met Ray. It is funny and cute. Ray laughed at it. So should we.

I tried to reply to that thread but the board was unstable/slow and wouldn't let me post.

I couldn't get in at all; i thought the web site crashed. There was a weird message like "Bad error."

The family is asking for small donations instead of flowers. They posted there charity they prefer. Maybe someone on this thread can get you the link.

Shocked and very sad is the only way to put it. I thought Ray would live to be a very old hippy. He was always so upbeat and vibrant. I count myself lucky to have seen him live in concert on two occasions with Robby.

- I think it is also important to celebrate Ray´s life!

He did live a full life and is most certain one of the most influential keyboardplayer in the last 50 years.

To this day I remember exactly when and where I first heard his beautiful sound. It was Light My Fire playing, I just froze and ran to the radio and put my ear to it, trying to grasp THE SOUND.

- Ray´s organ sound got me hooked to The Doors. And the fact that the bass in concerts was handled by Ray´s left hand is TOO much to understand.

That alone places him at the front table in the rock pantheon. Forever!

For Ray, less is more.

He always has great taste in the arranging of his playing, whether it is an organ, an electric piano or piano.

My favourite Manzarek playing is Yes, The River Knows. The piano is orchestrated in such a hush and quiet manner, that it evaporates like mist on a morning field. Beautiful, but not there!

His pièce de résistance will always be his recording of Carl Orff´s Carmina Burana. It is THE rock-opera set in rock and roll.

And in many ways the successor to The Celebration of The Lizard.

Ray tells in his book, that his father wanted the haunting song Olim Lacus Colueram- Once I swam the waters, played at his funeral.

I will be sure to play that piece in the time to come and think of Ray -

I'm in a state of shock. When I read the news (it was here on the board) I felt as I've instantly lost my body strength. I still feel powerless, even sick. Can't believe this is true, can't believe Ray is gone. Our Ray. As if I have lost another father. He seemed immortal with his animacy and life energy.

Goodbye Ray Manzarek. Thank you for the magic.

RIP.
